Welcome to the Library Stuff Page.
Feel free to add any hints or tips.
To locate research material for your project, check out the NCC Library website: library.ncc.edu
All the important research tools are in the left column.
To find books, click on NASCAT.
All books have call numbers to help you find them on the shelves.
Call numbers A-N are on the 2nd floor; P-Z are on the 3rd floor.
To find articles, use our databases. Click on Resources A-Z.
You will need your NCC ID barcode # if you are searching from home.
Each database has articles from magazines, newspapers and scholarly journals. Some have digital books.
Here are some good databases to try for this assignment.
Science Direct: Full text scholary journal articles.
Academic Search Premier: Articles in journals, magazines and newspapers. Click on the links to sort by type. Not all full-text.
Infotrac Onefile: Articles in journals, magazines and newspapers. Tabs on top indicate type of publication.
Gale Virtual Reference Library: Digital reference books (specialized encyclopedias, etc.) that contain signed articles from known scholars.
Any article that is not full-text may be available from another database (click the journal linker) or can be gotten (free) from another library through interlibrary loan. (Forms are online at the library website.)
Why not just go to the journal or newspaper website?
The answer is the articles will not be free, and you already pay enough to attend NCC. We pay for the database subscriptions so you don't have to pay for individual articles.
To find good Internet sources, evaluate the site carefully! Look for:
Who is the author or sponsor?
What type of information is provided?
When was the information posted?
Where is the information coming from- is the domain a .edu, .gov, .org, etc.
Why is the information posted; to educate, inform, present unbiased views?
Don't forget to cite your sources!! Don't want to get caught in the plagiarism trap.
Some of the databases create citations for you that you can cut and paste. For others, you will need to create the citation.
Here is a great link to MLA citation formats from Purdue University: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/557/01/
If you are not sure whether to cite something or not, try the plagiarism game from Acadia University
